One of the most popular spots on the island — an honest, first-hand family review of The Ugly Grouper, plus survival tips for parents on a hot Florida afternoon.

If you've spent any time researching the best restaurants on Anna Maria Island, The Ugly Grouper in Holmes Beach has undoubtedly popped up on your radar. It's easily one of the most popular, bustling spots on the island—and it's aptly named after one of the island's most favored fish to eat.

As a family that returns to AMI time and time again, making a pitstop here is a non-negotiable tradition for us. On our most recent visit, we brought the whole crew along—including our kids aged 6, 9, and 15. Here is our honest, first-hand review of why this casual spot keeps us coming back, along with a few survival tips for parents heading there on a baking-hot Florida afternoon.

The Vibe: Completely Outdoor & Wonderfully Casual

The first thing to know about The Ugly Grouper is that it is 100% outdoors. It has a fantastic, laid-back island atmosphere, but if you hit it on a scorching day, you definitely need to plan ahead.

Beat the Heat: Request a table tucked fully within the shade. They have incredible, high-powered fans scattered across the patio. We sat in the shade during a blistering day, and the staff set up a massive industrial fan right by us that completely did the job. To be honest, though, with young children in tow, we now avoid coming here when it's too hot—as the fans can only do so much.

Live Music: They feature live music on most days, which adds a lovely backdrop to the evening (it's worth checking their website ahead of time for the exact set times). Just a quick tip if you have younger kids or prefer to chat: try to ask for a table a little further back from the stage, as it can get quite loud right up front.

The Secret Weapon: How They Keep Kids Entertained

Any parent knows that waiting for food at a busy restaurant can be a testing experience. The Ugly Grouper absolutely nails the family-friendly details with a few simple touches that make a massive difference.

Wax String Art: Instead of standard crayons that roll off the table, they hand out packs of wax craft strings to make little figures and artwork. Our kids were totally engrossed, keeping them happy and quiet while we waited. In fact, they always ask to go back to "the place where they get those little packs." Any parent can appreciate how helpful those little touches are.

Ring Toss Games: Around the outdoor space, they have minor ring toss games set up, which are perfect for letting the kids burn off some energy while you sip a cold drink.

The Photo Op: You legally cannot leave without taking a family photo in front of the massive, iconic Ugly Grouper fish statue. It was custom-built by a local artist who used scrap metal to create it, and it's a true island landmark.

The Food: Are These the Best Tacos on AMI?

Let's talk food. The menu isn't cheap, but the quality completely justifies the price tag. Every single meal we've ordered here across multiple trips has been excellent. But there is one standout superstar you have to order: the Grouper Tacos. Unbelievable—hands down, these are the absolute best fish tacos I've had on Anna Maria Island by far. Fresh, perfectly seasoned, and worth the trip alone.

The Verdict: Is It Worth the Crowd?

There's a reason this place is consistently packed. It's wonderfully casual, the food is top-tier, and they truly understand how to cater to families with kids of all ages. It gets incredibly busy, so prepare for a wait during peak hours, but we can always see why.
