The Ultimate Oceanfront Family Getaway: A Review of 'Ship Watch'

3 beds / 3 baths / Accommodates 8 guests. The name of this place gives away its biggest draw—it overlooks the glittering water, and you can easily spend an entire day sitting outside watching the ships sail calmly by.

On our recent week-long family vacation, we found an absolute gem. Traveling as a family of eight (our four children, my wife and I, and the grandparents), we weren't entirely sure how a cozy three-bedroom property with no swimming pool would handle all of us.

Spoiler alert: It is easily my new favorite vacation home on Anna Maria Island. Here is my honest review of this stunning beachfront property and why it might be the perfect fit for your next family getaway.

The "Welcome Home" Moment & Local Wildlife

The defining feature of Ship Watch is its location. It sits right on the water, and the views are nothing short of phenomenal.

It sounds simple, but one of my absolute favorite parts of every single day was just arriving back at the house. As you drive up and park, you are greeted by a sweeping, dramatic view of the open ocean. Stepping out of the car and walking toward the front door with that fresh sea breeze and endless blue view in front of you never got old.

Our very first afternoon set a standard that was hard to beat. As we sat out on the patio unpacking our things, a pod of dolphins swam right past the house. We ended up seeing dolphins four separate times on our first day alone! By the fourth time, I was shouting, "Kids, look, more dolphins!" and they were already so spoiled by the location they just replied, "Yeah, yeah, dad, we see them!"

Smart Spaces: The Multigenerational Layout

Don't let the "three-bedroom" label fool you; the layout configuration here is a masterclass in smart design.

The Upstairs Family Suite

The entire second floor is a massive, brilliantly designed bedroom that quickly became the heart of our stay. It features two double beds with two single bunk beds nested directly above them, alongside its own dedicated en-suite bathroom.

While that configuration might sound crowded on paper, for a family on vacation, it was pure magic. My wife, our four kids, and I all shared this room. Two of the kids took the top bunks, we shared a double, and the other children had the second double bed. It created an incredibly cozy, highly sociable environment. We came on vacation to spend quality time together, and this room made it unforgettable. (Though it's worth noting: if you're after a little bit of alone time, this isn't the room for you!)

Ground Floor: Privacy for Grandparents

Downstairs, the ground floor features two double bedrooms, effectively boasting their own bathrooms. My parents took the downstairs area, giving them a quiet, private sanctuary away from the morning chaos of four excited grandchildren. Because of how well the upstairs bedroom worked for us, we actually ended up with a spare bedroom downstairs.

Inside Ship Watch: Minimalist Coastal Living

The main living accommodation is wonderfully functional and incredibly tasteful. It features a bright living room and kitchen area, complete with a cozy dining nook that perfectly complements the outdoor dining setups.

Having stayed all over the island, we've noticed that local rental decor can sometimes feel a bit dated or cluttered. Not this place. It features a gorgeous, minimal beach aesthetic that perfectly matches the island's laid-back vibe. It isn't the largest space in the world, but it felt open, airy, and more than enough for our group.

The outdoor patio is fully equipped with plenty of sun loungers, chairs, parasols, and a barbecue for alfresco dinners. No matter where you are sitting—inside the living room or out on the patio—you have a front-row seat to the ocean.

Important to Note: No Pool, But Who Needs One?

Before we booked, one of my main hesitations was that the property does not have a swimming pool. With a big family, a pool is usually a must-have box to tick. However, because you are in such breathtakingly close proximity to the ocean, it didn't end up being an issue whatsoever. The sea is your entertainment.

⚠️ A Note on the Waterfront Layout & Safety

It is important to know that you cannot walk straight off the property into a soft, sandy beach. Instead, there is a small boundary wall with large rocks right on the other side. You can climb down to the water, but it is not the kind of shoreline where toddlers can just run freely into the waves.

Our children are all very sensible, so it acted as a natural barrier that kept them from wandering into the water unsupervised. However, if you have toddlers or very young, adventurous kids, the combination of the small wall and the rocky drop-off below is definitely something to be mindful of.

Booking with Island Life Vacation Rentals: First-Class Service

Over the years, we have booked through many different rental companies across the island—in fact, we've probably tried them all. This time, we went through Island Life and, as always, I was impressed with their service.

Seamless Booking: The initial booking process was completely effortless. We handled it over the phone, and they sent over a secure payment link immediately, making the deposit and confirmation a breeze.

Rapid Customer Support: You really test a rental company when things don't go perfectly, and Island Life passed with flying colors. When we arrived, we noticed the property didn't have quite enough plates for a group of our size, and there was a minor issue with the air conditioning. We called it in, and their team came out immediately to resolve the AC and restock the kitchen.

Addressing the Reviews: The Public Access Way

Before booking, I read a few reviews where past guests complained about the property's location next to a public beach access path, which features a small park bench. Some felt it compromised their privacy. Our experience was the exact opposite.

Because the path and bench are on one side of the property, it means there is no neighboring house blocking your space, making the entire plot feel much larger and more open. Furthermore, you cannot really see into the house from the bench, so privacy was never an issue.

Instead, the bench added a wonderful social element to our trip. When we were hanging out on the patio, we frequently struck up lovely conversations with locals and travelers resting on the bench. It felt welcoming and community-minded—honestly, it became one of the highlights of our stay.

The Verdict: Would We Stay Again?

In a heartbeat. If you are looking for a stylish, beautifully decorated, oceanfront rental, and a pool isn't an absolute essential for your crew, this is it. Between the dolphin sightings, the sociable upstairs family room, and the endless sea views, Ship Watch gave us a week we will talk about for years to come.
